1988 Domaine René Engel Echezeaux (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru) 4/27/2024Montesquieu98

This bottle was magical. My WOTN against Leroy, DRC, Petrus, Guigal, Yquem. One of those bottles that hooks you on Burgundy and never lets go. (67 views)

2002 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Brulées (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru) 4/25/2024Burgnick94

Intoxicating Leroy-like aroma with excellent red fruit purity and sweetness. Hard not to love. It started to fade after an hour. At peak. (306 views)

2000 Domaine René Engel Grands-Echezeaux (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru) 3/15/2024hprphf96

René Engel: Light TCA, salvaged by decanting with cellphone wrap. Such clean fruit, candied and red, opulently lifted sweet spice almost excessive, primrose, orange acidity, woody, cherry blossom. Truly a great wine in its infinite texture variation and dimension. Clean, so pure. ~96-97 (246 views)

1990 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru) 3/15/2024nmmnori96

Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): In close quality to the 2000. At a different point in its evolution and a wine of great concentration. Aromaticlly complex and hedonisticly giving. Like the 00, the tannin was resolved and the wine was elegant and giving. In contrast, however, one could tell that the concentration of the 90, the stuctural presence, was more robust. I think I have a slight preference for the more feminine 2000. Contender for wine of the night given. (234 views)

1990 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru) 3/15/2024hprphf96

René Engel: Consensus WOTN in terms of showing, while others could use many more years. Flamboyant and sexy with fully resolved spice, ready if inviting, a ripe all-in vintage at its very best. Someone remarked what I was thinking - who did better Engel or Dujac in this vintage? Actually a very very tough question. 95-96 (258 views)

1996 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru) 3/15/2024hprphf93

René Engel: Weirdest of the Vougeot flight, which are all somewhat different. Showing some vintage herbal qualities but not medicinal, dark broody fruit, spicy but not quite sexy. Clearly of quality just quite different, which is not surprising given the producer. 93 (243 views)

1996 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru) 3/15/2024nmmnori91

Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): Similar in vein to the 02 and dominated by 96 characteristics. Acidity was very pronounced and the wine was extremely rustic. Almost exhibited a gevery-like funk / animal. (206 views)

2002 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Brulées (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru) 3/15/2024nmmnori95

Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): A stunning wine of both elegance and power. Lovely red fruits with a beautiful clarity and levirty to the wine. Tannins are integrated and yet the wine has a fantastic underlying structure. Beautiful and contender for WOTN. (250 views)

2002 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Brulées (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru) 3/15/2024hprphf94

René Engel: Consistent with the 02 Vougeot this shows tougher and perhaps more whole fruit, but certainly less yielding than other bottles. Focus on spice in this terroir, heat and rose, so clearly Vosne. 93-94 (331 views)

1999 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Brulées (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru) 3/15/2024nmmnori93

Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): Slightly more brooding and rustic than the 02 drank side by side. Almost seems slightly more extracted. Can still use additional bottle age. (217 views)

1999 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Brulées (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru) 3/15/2024hprphf95

René Engel: The more I drank this the more I liked it, the vintage hotness combines so well with the terroir heat, but almost understated that it is disguised under the stunning fruit quality, a protective shield so to say. One of the most intellectual wines that transcend to be a contender for WOTN after enough air. 94-95 (299 views)

1994 Domaine René Engel Echezeaux (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru) 3/15/2024hprphf94

René Engel: Surprisingly very good, lighter than other bottles but not quite marked by the vintage, notable Echezeaux woodiness coming through still red fruit making this one of the best and cleanest interpretation of the terroir I have tasted. 94 (184 views)

1994 Domaine René Engel Echezeaux (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru) 3/15/2024nmmnori94

Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): Showed very well. Mature, but still with the tension and excitement that one desires. Firmly in the red fruit camp with very resolved tannins lending to a very easy drinking and pleasurable ech. Less structured than most of the other Engel bottles on the table, but elgant and in balance. (128 views)
